Scientix webinar Board game based learning

The webinar took place in the Scientix online meeting room on Tuesday 21st november at 17:00 CET Central European Time.

Webinar outline: Games can be used to make learning fun and faster, as number of authors have demonstrated in their research. As teachers we can create board games with aim of following a progress of students and motivating them at same time. This games can be used as a way of preparing for final exams, helping students learn from other classmates, or motivate them to prepare in advance using different sources of material.
In a first part Mladen Šljivović will describe rules and his experience with Hembizika, a board game that combines physics, biology and chemistry.
In a second part of the webinar Hembizika 2.0, a card based game, will be introduced. It will be shown that using cards instead classic board can give teacher more control of a class.
A group turned based quiz will be shown in third part. In this activity students need to come up with their own questions for opposing teams. Faults and advantages of this type of questioning will be shown. Finally, an example of game based on science books will be provided to participants.

About the presenter:
Mladen Å ljivovic is a Scientix ambassador for Serbia. As a physics teacher he is working in both elementary school and high school in Zajecar. He has developed with his students a board game: Hembizika for which they were given 1st prize at a Main à la Pâte (LAMAP) 2016. After that he started using a similar approach to his class developing quiz based games for students. In 2017 he organized a virtual presentation about one of the board games used in his class at LUMAT symposium in Helsinki, and published a paper in a Serbian journal dedicated to physics education "Nastava fizike". In the same year his idea for a role played game based on Ender’s game by Orson Scott Card was awarded at the STEM discovery week competition in ”Your favorite science book” category. He has found that using games from time to time as one of methods can help in motivating students to explore and use different resources when preparing for class.
