News24 - Ed Woodward identifies No.1 choice for Man Utd director of football role

The word coming out of Manchester United is that chief executive Ed Woodward wants to make one signing before making a call on the next permanent Old Trafford boss - but it won't be on the pitch. Woodward reportedly wants to get a director of football in position before any serious recruitment business is delved into, but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill from turning. Bristol City youngster Antoine Semenyo, the race for whom United have entered alongside Chelsea , is one name that continues to attach itself to United - the club sent scouts to watch the on-loan Newport County player in December and, according to Bristol City's Brian Tinnion the red Devils "really like him." Here's the state of play with United's winter transfer business. Paul Mitchell That director of football role has become a priority for United's hierarchy since the removal of Jose Mourinho, and RB Leipzig's Paul Mitchell is the front runner. Woodward was previously interested in former Juventus director Giuseppe Marotta and current Old Lady sporting director Fabio Paratici. But Marotta transferred to Serie A rivals Inter Milan and Paratici made clear his plans to remain in Turin, ending United's hopes of landing either man. That in turn has left Englishman Mitchell at the head of the line. Antoine Semenyo Chelsea are reportedly ready to fight United all the way over the Bristol City youngster. Londoner Semenyo made his debut for City at the end of last season and has scored six goals for Newport – with the Robins demanding £2million in compensation if he leaves Ashton Gate. Mirror Sport revealed in December that United had sent scouts to watch Semenyo. Scott McTominay Not a new face, but the club have been understandably pleased to tie the Scotland midfielder down to a new deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2023. And boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn't the only one with a smile on his face. The man himself said: “ Manchester United has been my life since the age of five and playing for the club I've always supported is all I've ever wanted to do. “I'm still young and I'm learning all the time from the manager, his coaching staff and from the world-class players in the squad."
